My goal with our bedroom was to create a light and airy space that felt inviting and cozy. When we first moved in, this room had dingy beige walls and wall to wall carpet. Needless to say this room needed some love.
The first thing we did was rip out the carpet and installed pre-finished hard wood flooring to match the main space flooring that was already existing. It was definitely an undertaking but so worth the labor and investment.
We’ve made so many changes to our master bedroom, but I would say the biggest change we made was the accent wall and a fresh coat of white paint. Never underestimate the power of paint! It made our room feel twice as big.
Since our room is on the small side I really tried to create elements that made our bedroom feel more spacious…
- Light wall color
- Accent wall that draws the eye up
- Low profile bed
- Thicker baseboards
- White bedding
- Avoided bulky furniture
- Light filtering curtains vs black out
- Multi-functional furniture
Focusing on these elements quickly transformed this space into that ‘light + airy’ vibe I was striving for. Another reason I like to keep spaces on the neutral side is so I can change my decor out for the seasons without having to change everything. It’s like a blank canvas that can constantly change with you as your taste and preferences evolve.
Unless your doing a full blown renovation you can’t change the footprint of your space to make it bigger. Keeping these tips in mind when setting up your space can help transform those basic four walls into a space you actually want to spend time in.
