This room has come a long way since we moved in! As much as I like the color red, I am not a fan of it being on my interior walls. Nor am I a fan of carpet, so we chose to rip it out and lay tile down. These two decisions made such a huge impact in this space!
As there is no formal dining room in our house, I thought this space would work well as a dining/seating area. It is a seasonal porch, so we only have use of it during the warmer months. We my eventually winterize the room so we can use it year round.
When considering the design of this space, I wanted to have fun with it and give it a moody vibe. When you think of a sunroom, “light and airy” typically comes to mind. But natural sunlight provides the freedom to use bolder colors and not have to worry if it will make the room too dark. So for the walls I chose Sherwin Williams® Urbane Bronze…and I absolutely love it! It’s the perfect dark gray. I’ve even utilized it in multiple rooms of our home.
Once we chose our paint color, we had to select our tile. I wanted to go lighter with the tile but have it play off the wall color, so we went with a fun pattern tile that had a gray pattern in it. Then, to soften up the room and add some texture, I used a jute rug. This also helped to ground the space and create focus towards the center of the room where we placed our table.
The last item on my to-do list was to figure out a budget-friendly window treatment option – which resulted in me making them myself! I knew I wanted a leather accent on them, and found some inspiration from different Etsy shops. I figured I would try to emulate that. This task would have been a lot easier if I still had a sewing machine, but I decided to try hook-&-loop velcro adhesive tape as an alternative.
Instead of purchasing fabric, I used a curtain panel I had on hand and formed a shade to the size of my windows, securing them with the velcro tape. Once the panel was finished, I used leather straps that I attached snaps to so I could roll the shade and secure it, while adding a decorative accent. I chose to only put the shades on four of the windows (where we will occasionally want privacy from neighbors) and left the windows bordering our backyard bare, as our yard is backed by foliage. While I’ll admit they aren’t perfect, I am happy with the end result and money saved!
Now, this room feels cozy and inviting and is one of my favorite places to be in our house. I have a feeling this will be my coffee drinking, book reading, art making, project station for many years to come. I hope it inspires you to make more spaces cozy in your home.
