If your looking for a simple, minimalistic way to display your photos or artwork a photo ledge is a great option from the traditional gallery wall. A DIY photo ledge is an inexpensive way to create a focal point in your room and it’s easy to customize it to your design aesthetic.
While I could go and purchase a photo ledge easily enough I found that building it myself was way more cost effective (considering I needed a 6 foot ledge) and allowed me to tailor it to my specific needs by matching the stain to other items around the house. The savings from building it myself were around $140! I’d say thats well worth the time if you have the tools.
Here is a list of items you will need to create your own photo ledge…

Tools Needed:
- 1×2 Select Pine Board (or your wood of choice)
- 1×3 Select Pine Board
- 1×4 Select Pine Board
- Stain or paint of your choice, I used this stain
- Miter Saw (if you don’t own one the lumber store can make cuts)
- Measuring Tape
- Rag
- Drill
- Nail gun and nails
- Screws
- Sander or sand paper
- Lint Free Cloth ( I used an old cut up t-shirt)
- Gloves
Step 1:
Prep your wood boards. Remove all stickers and staples and sand to remove any rough edges. You can use a piece of sand paper or a hand sander.
Step 2:
Stain (or paint) your wood pieces to the color of your choosing. I used the Minwax Stain, in the finish Early American. I recommend wearing a protective glove so you don’t get any stain on your hands.
Dip your rag into the stain and work the stain into the wood. I prefer a light coat so once my board is coated I wipe off any excess.
Step 3:
Apply wood glue to either side of your 1×3 board and attach the front and back pieces and clamp it together. Let the glue dry for at least 6 hours.
Step 4:
Attach nails and screws to secure your boards. Depending on how long your board is, it could be helpful to have an extra set of hands for this step. I used a nail gun to secure the boards first and then put 5 screws into the 1×4 board attaching it to the 1×3 board.
Step 5:
Locate your wall studs and attach your ledge to the wall and display your favorite artwork or photos!
